Willoughby City Council Unanimously Adopts Motion to Contribute to Mayoral Appeal for Artsakh

SYDNEY: On Monday, 25th September 2023, Willoughby City Council reiterated its support for the Republic of Artsakh and its people, pledging $1,500 to contribute to the Mayor’s Appeal for Artsakh, which intends to provide urgent humanitarian relief to the people of Artsakh, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU). The motion, moved by Armenian-Australian Councillor Sarkis Mouradian and seconded by Councillor Craig Campbell, was carried with the support of all other councillors, including Mayor Tanya Taylor. Mouradian, who was elected to the Willoughby City Council in 2021, worked closely with the ANC-AU to secure a financial contribution to support what is the Ryde City Council’s Mayor’s of Appeal of Artsakh, which is in partnership with the Armenia Relief Society of Australia to raise urgent funds amongst the broader community. The motion, adopted by all present councillors, calls for Federal and State governments to condemn Azerbaijan’s attack on the civilian population of Artsakh, calls on the Federal and State governments to “urgently deliver aid to the region, and calls on Azerbaijan to guarantee the rights and security of the people of Artsakh as per the 9 November 2020 ceasefire agreement. On behalf of the Armenian-Australian community, the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) expressed its sincere appreciation and thanks to Mouradian for championing the motion and to all Councillors for their support. Armenian National Committee of Australia, Executive Director Michael Kolokossian said, “We are working with our counterparts from the Armenian Relief Society of Australia (ARS-AU) and their central body to urgently provide relief as we now witness a mass exodus of Armenians from Artsakh who are in dire need of assistance.”
