CANBERRA: The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) has announced the launch of a petition on the official website of the Australian Parliament, calling on the nation's lawmakers and Government to condemn Azerbaijan’s blockade of the Republic of Artsakh.
Not satisfied by committing 44 days of war crimes in 2020, currently occupying more than 70% of the Republic of Artsakh and attacking the sovereign borders of Armenia, the autocratic regime of Azerbaijan has subjected over 120,000 Christian Armenians of Artsakh to inhumane living conditions as a result of its state-sponsored blockade of the Lachin corridor since the 12th of December 2022 – a road that is Artsakh’s sole lifeline to the outside world in an act that contravenes of the 2020 ceasefire agreement.
The International Association of Genocide Scholars has proclaimed that “significant genocide risk factors exist in the Nagorno-Karabakh situation concerning the Armenian population”.
This petition, which has been published following approval by the Australian Parliament's House of Representatives' Standing Committee on Petitions, requests Australia's Parliament stands with the International Court of Justice––the top judicial organ of the United Nations––and helps prevent a second Armenian Genocide by unequivocally calling on Azerbaijan to comply with the ICJ’s ruling and end the blockade of Artsakh.
"We call all Armenian-Australians and allies of our community to stand with us and sign a petition to help usher Australia to publicly support the safety and integrity of the Armenian homeland," said ANC-AU Executive Director, Michael Kolokossian.
