SYDNEY: The newly elected State Member for Smithfield Andrew Rohan MP and staffer Zaya Toma recently paid a visit to the national office of the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) in order to discuss a broad range of issues.
Rohan, was greeted at the office by ANC Australia Executive Director Varant Meguerditchian and ANC Australia Western Sydney representatives Garbis Kolokossian and Elie Babik, who raised with the Member various international human rights and domestic Armenian-Australian community issues.
The Member for Smithfield, who upon election in March 2011, addressed the issue of the Armenian and Assyrian Genocides in his maiden parliamentary speech was receptive to the ANC Australia’s concerns, committing to attend to any matters raised by the Armenian community in the Sydney West electorate of Smithfield.
Rohan said: "The Armenian-Australians of Western Sydney play an integral role in the fabric of Australian society and I pledge to continue addressing their concerns with my parliamentary colleagues."
ANC Australia Executive Director Varant Meguerditchian thanked the Member for Smithfield.
He said: “We are confident that Mr Rohan will become a leading voice for Armenians in Western Sydney and we look forward to working with the Member during this current parliamentary term.â€
Rohan who is the second Australian of Assyrian heritage to serve in the NSW Parliament, was presented at the meeting with material regarding the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides, as well as information relating to the local Armenian community in Smithfield.
