SYDNEY: In the lead up to the NSW State Election Rev. Fred Nile MLC met with Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) Executive Director Varant Meguerditchian to discuss matters concerning Armenians in NSW.
Although Nile’s term in the Legislative Council expires in 2015, the leader of the Christian Democratic Party declared his party’s hopes of attaining a second seat in the NSW Legislative Council come the 26th of March.
Nile, the longest serving Member of the Upper House was present in 1997, when the NSW Parliament passed a resolution recognising the Armenian Genocide as a crime against humanity.
Since that time, in two separate adjournment speeches delivered in NSW Parliament, Nile has called for recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Federal Parliament of Australia.
At the meeting, Nile promised to continue voicing the concerns of the Armenian-Australian community.
He said: “Armenians became victims of genocide in the early part of the twentieth century and remain subject to discrimination in Turkey and other parts of the Middle East.â€
“I will continue to speak to raise awareness and to ensure that the persecution of Armenians is brought to an end.â€
Meguerditchian thanked Nile for his commitment to consistently addressing Armenian-Australian concerns in Parliament.
“We thank Rev. Nile for his support and look forward to even greater cooperation with his office after the coming election.â€
