SYDNEY: Federal Member for the Armenian-Australian populated electorate of Bradfield Paul Fletcher MP pledged to unequivocally support the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide at the next sitting of Parliament, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia).
Fletcher, who only last year took over as Member for Bradfield following the retirement of the Hon. Dr. Brendan Nelson, already demonstrated his eagerness to present the concerns of Armenian-Australians when he addressed Federal Parliament regarding the passing of Sydney-based Armenian Genocide survivor Arshag Badelian.
At the meeting, Fletcher remarked: "I am aware of the historical truth of the Armenian Genocide and have broadened my knowledge after having attended the Armenian Genocide Commemoration at Macquarie University in April this year."
"Should I be re-elected at the upcoming Federal Election to represent the people of Bradfield, I shall continue to remind the Federal Parliament and Australian society more generally of the importance of Armenian Genocide recognition."
ANC Australia Executive Director Varant Meguerditchian thanked Fletcher for his principled position, stating: "Mr. Fletcher clearly demonstrated his support for recognition of the Armenian Genocide when he took the matter to the House floor only three months into his first term."
He added: "Bradfield is home to many Armenian-Australian families, and we look forward to continue working closely with Mr. Fletcher to advance our issues of concern."
