SYDNEY: John Kaye MLC reaffirmed support for the Armenian-Australian community in a pre-election meeting with the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) ahead of the NSW State Election, which will be held on 26 March.
Kaye, whose own term in the Legislative Council does not expire until 2015, also reassured ANC Australia that human rights issues including the Armenian Genocide remain a priority for the NSW Greens.
He said: “The healing of this grave injury to decency cannot be completed until the process of truth and reconciliation removes the stain of decades of official denial.â€
“The Greens recognise the mass murder, forced marches and deportations of Armenians as acts of genocide."
ANC Australia Executive Director Varant Meguerditchian thanked Kaye for the Greens’ principled position, stating: “We appreciate the consistent support we have received from Dr Kaye and the NSW Greens.â€
“We look forward to a productive period of cooperation with the NSW Greens in the next parliament.â€
The NSW Greens are hopeful of winning three seats in the NSW Legislative Council at the upcoming election to bring their total to five.
