Kylea Tink MP Rises in House of Representatives Calling on Australia to Recognise 1915 Armenian Genocide

CANBERRA: Member for North Sydney, Ms Kylea Tink MP, has risen in the Australian Parliament's House of Representatives chamber, calling on the Australian Federal Government to recognise the Ottoman Empire’s massacres against Armenians between 1915 - 1923 as Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU).
On May 14th, Tink delivered a powerful address following her attendance at the National Commemoration of the 109th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in April 2024.
Tink, who has also signed Joint Justice Initiative’s Affirmation of Support document calling for Federal recognition of the 1915-1923 Genocides, said, “109 years since the world witnessed the mass murder of more than 1.5 million Armenians and over a million Assyrians and Greeks at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, our government, regardless of which major political party was running it is yet to recognise these events as an act of Genocide.”
“As painful as it is, the world must acknowledge the horrors that were committed under the guise of World War I as genocide so we can unite against such atrocities from ever happening again. I am proud to stand with the Armenian community in North Sydney in once again calling on the Australian government to recognise the Armenian Genocide,” added Tink.
Since her election to the Federal Parliament in May 2022, Tink has attended the National Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in 2023 and 2024, standing against Australia’s failure to characterise these events by their true name.
ANC-AU Executive Director, Michael Kolokossian thanked Ms Tink and her office for the powerful statement.
Kolokossian said, “The support shown at this year’s six Armenian Genocide commemorations across the country was overshadowed the shameful silence on the Armenian Genocide by our nation's Prime Minister and Opposition Leader. Thank you to Ms Tink for holding our leaders accountable. Our community is tired, fed up and no longer want to volunteer, vote or promote anyone peddling lip service and lies.”
