SYDNEY: Gladys Berejiklian, the NSW Member for Willoughby, has been named as Transport Minister of Australia's largest state, making her the first Armenian to serve as a Minister in an Australian state government.
The Liberal and National Coalition won the recent New South Wales State Election under the guidance of leader Barry O'Farrell, who considers Berejiklian a key component of his team. Her high standing is exemplified by her gaining the Transport portfolio, which is considered the toughest of all portfolios in NSW.
The loveable former board member of the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) will also henceforth be prefaced with the title 'The Honourable' when being referred to in official circles.
ANC Australia Executive Director Varant Meguerditchian said: "Gladys' most recent achievement is a source of pride for our community."
"We wish her the very best in her new role and look forward to continuing to work with her to advance the issues that concern Armenian-Australians."
