SYDNEY: Students from Galstaun College dedicated gold coin donations totalling over $500 to #COMBATCOVID in Armenia – the Armenian National Committee of Australia’s fundraising drive to help the country's overwhelmed healthcare system as it continues to see a growth in confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
On 26th June, the school’s Student Representative Council (SRC) held their Hero Day initiative, where students were required to dress as an individual who inspires them and donate a gold coin to a worthy cause.
"As a student body, we are extremely proud to donate to this initiative as we believe that contributing to the purchasing of medical supplies will greatly assist in dealing with COVID-19 in Armenia," said Galstaun College SRC member Karni Boghossian.
"We hope that our contribution will make a difference and inspire others to contribute as well."
With the assistance of the Galstaun College students, alongside the Armenian Relief Society, Homenetmen Scouting and Sporting Association, Hamazkaine Educational & Cultural Society, Armenian Resource Centre, Armenian Youth Federation and Armenia Media, the Armenian-Australian community has already raised over the targeted $25,000, even overtaking $30,000 with the drive to continue until 17 July 2020.
"We must continue to increase our collection to ensure that we maximise our assistance for our sisters and brothers in Armenia who need care at this critical time," said Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) Executive Director, Haig Kayserian.
The ANC-AU launched this campaign two weeks ago after consulting Armenia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who obtained a list of critical medical equipment and supplies being sought from the Ministry of Health. This list includes patient monitors, thermometers, centrifuges, oxygen concentrators, pulse oximeters and more.
A group of Armenian-Australian medical professionals are assisting to source these items from the necessary medical equipment available in the Australian market, which will be purchased and freighted to Armenia.
"It was fantastic to see all the students come together for Hero Day, our whole school's mural activity and dress up event," said Primary School Teacher, Tamar Kherlopian.
"We would like to extend our gratitude to our families and school community for their support towards Hero Day. We are incredibly proud to have done our part to assist our brothers and sisters in Armenia by contributing to the #COMBATCOVID in Armenia fundraiser."
"Well done to the ANC for conducting a wonderful initiative. Anyone can make a positive impact, in any way or form."
