Federal MP Condemns Genocidal Crimes by Azerbaijan Against Armenians of Artsakh
Friday, 15 December 2023
CANBERRA: Federal Member for Berowra, Julian Leeser, delivered a powerful address during the final federal parliamentary session of the year, shedding light on the ethnic cleansing of the Republic of Artsakh and extending solidarity towards the Armenian people, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU).
In his speech on 30 November 2023 in the Federation Chamber, Mr. Leeser underscored the dire situation faced by the Armenian people of Artsakh, drawing parallels to historical genocidal acts committed by the Ottoman Empire, noting current attacks targeting civilians, schools, churches, and the deliberate disruption of vital supply routes to Artsakh by Azerbaijan.
"This targeting of Armenian churches in Artsakh mirrors activity undertaken a century ago during the Armenian Genocide," Mr. Leeser emphasised, noting the grim echoes of past atrocities.
During the speech, the 2022 Armenian-Australian Community’s Friend of the Year emphasised the critical need for international attention and intervention in ensuring the rights of ethnic Armenians to return home safely to Artsakh. He also urged the release of political prisoners, hostages, and prisoners of war held by Azerbaijan.
"Solidarity matters. Words matter because they sustain hope – and I stand with my Armenian friends, as so many Australians do," Mr. Leeser added.
In reacting to Mr. Leeser's address, Michael Kolokossian, Executive Director of the ANC-AU, welcomed the support and acknowledgment extended by the former Shadow Attorney General.
"Mr. Leeser's speech resonates deeply with the challenges faced by the indigenous Armenians of Artsakh. His solidarity and commitment to highlighting these atrocities are commendable," stated Kolokossian.
In closing, Leeser acknowledged the 2023 ANC-AU Youth Advocates who met with the Federal MP on this issue and concluded his speech with a heartfelt message: "May the people of Artsakh be free to return safely to their homes soon."
