SYDNEY: On 27th April 2021, Deputy Mayor of City of Fairfield, Paul Azzo rose during a Council Meeting to mark the 106th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire between 1915 - 1923, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) – Western Sydney Branch.
Deputy Mayor Azzo’s said: “24th April each year is the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, when 1.5 million Armenians were killed under the cover of World War 1. The same genocide also included Greeks and Assyrians which saw over 3 million innocent men, women and children killed.”
He added: “We call on the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Scott Morrison to recognise the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides.”
ANC-AU Western Sydney Branch Chairperson, Michael Kolokossian welcomed the statement and thanked Deputy Mayor Azzo for his continued efforts in advocating for justice and recognition of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides.
“It is through the hard work and efforts of individuals like Deputy Mayor Paul Azzo that we have been able to advance the cause for genocide justice on behalf of our ancestors in Australia,” Kolokossian said.
“We look forward to working with the Deputy Mayor and his Fairfield City colleagues to advance the concerns and interests of the Armenian-Australian community living in the municipality,” added Kolokossian.
