SYDNEY: The Australian Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (AIHGS) has announced that Dr. Deborah Mayersen will keynote the 2023 Armenian Genocide Commemorative Lecture, which will be held at the New South Wales Parliament House Theatrette on Thursday, 30th November 2023.
The event, which has been held annually since 1996, is sponsored by the Armenian-Australian community of New South Wales, honouring the NSW Parliament's recognition of the 1915-1923 Armenian Genocide.
The AIHGS has announced that the event, previously hosted in April, will hereafter be held annually in the last sitting week of the NSW Parliament to mark the
International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime - marked internationally on 9th December.
This year’s Armenian Genocide Commemorative Lecture is the first event held since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will include a wreath-laying ceremony at the Armenian Genocide Memorial Khatchkar (cross-stone) located in parliament grounds, followed by Dr. Mayersen's keynote. Dr. Deborah Mayersen, a Senior Lecturer in International and Political Studies at the University of New South Wales Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy is the 2023 distinguished guest speaker. Dr. Mayersen's research expertise is in the field of genocide studies, including the Armenian Genocide, the Rwandan Genocide and genocide prevention.
