SYDNEY: The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) pushed for Federal Australian recognition of the Armenian Genocide with a six-person delegation visiting over 30 legislators in Canberra on Tuesday, 9th of March.
The visit came hot on the heels of the United States House Foreign Relations Committee passing a resolution to push for American recognition of the Armenian Genocide last week, as well as the sad passing of Sydney-based Armenian Genocide survivor, Mr. Arshag Badelian.
ANC Australia President Varant Meguerditchian said the meetings, which addressed recognition of the Armenian Genocide among other issues of concern to the Armenian-Australian community, were "highly constructive".
"We have reached the stage where introducing the topic of the Armenian Genocide is no longer needed," he said. "We are now discussing how we can advance the topic and add Australia's name to those nations who have officially recognised the Armenian Genocide."
Meguerditchian and ANC Australia Communications Officer Haig Kayserian were interviewed on national radio, from the ABC studio within Parliament House. Media interest in the push for Federal recognition of the Armenian Genocide is reportedly at an all-time high.
Kayserian said: "This interview is the second national radio interview we have given in the past seven days, and we have other appointments for radio and television lined up in coming days and months to discuss the Armenian Genocide, and the importance of Australia to recognise it."
