Australian premiere screening of Hrant Dink - Heart of Two Nations
Tuesday, 22 June 2010
SYDNEY: Hrant Dink - Heart of Two Nations, the documentary where film-maker Nouritza Matossian and Hrant Dink discuss the issues of Turkish society and the Armenian Genocide prior to Dink's untimely death will premiere in Sydney this July.
The film's director Matossian, who broadcasts on the BBC, will be in Australia at the invitation of the Hamazkaine Shant Chapter to attend the Sydney premiere and associated public events.
The film premiere, which concludes a series of events held by Matossian during her week-long visit to Australia, will premiere at the Nalbandian Hall of Galstaun College on Tuesday 6th July (for tickets see details on flyer).
From as early as 2004 Matossian interviewed Dink, shooting their talks with her mini camcorder. After his murder Matossian produced the documentary in which Dink talks of his weekly paper AGOS, his attempts to reconcile Armenians and Turks, to educate Diaspora Armenians about contemporary democratic Turks, for open dialogue about Armenian history and genocide with Turks clearing the way for Turkey to join the EU and open the border with Armenia.
"The screening will provide the Armenian- Australian audience with an opportunity to see a brilliant film that has earned international acclaim," said ANC Australia's Community Relations Officer, Stephen Abolakian.
"Matossian has brought the important issue of genocide awareness by successfully capturing and recording the thoughts of Dink, the human rights activist and advocate for freedom of speech."
The documentary was filmed as Dink faced several charges for 'insulting Turkishness', was prosecuted, sentenced and warned to leave the country after receiving death threats. It was released on the first anniversary of Dink's death after he was finally murdered by extremist Turkish nationalists for speaking about the Armenian Genocide.
The documentary Hrant Dink Heart of Two Nations was awarded Audience First Prize at Toronto Pomegranate Film Festival.
