SYDNEY: Armenian-Australians are encouraged to respond to the devastating humanitarian consequences of the recent earthquakes in Syria and Turkey by donating during the #TogetherForSyria Telethon hosted on Monday 20th February 2023, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU).
The deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake which struck between the Syria and Turkey border has killed more than 30,000, with the death toll rising daily and has left Armenian-populated villages and towns across Syria in ruins.
Reports have emerged that thousands of Syrian-Armenian families have been forced to take shelter in Armenian churches, schools and community centres across Aleppo, a vibrant hub for the Armenian community living in Syria.
Armenian-Australian community leaders are calling on the broader community to respond to the plight of our Syrian-Armenian brothers and sisters by providing financial support and contributing to this humanitarian appeal.
In the week leading up to the Telethon, Armenian-Australian community centres will be open from 6:00 pm - 9:00pm across Sydney, with volunteers accepting donations from members of the community.
On Monday 20th February 2023, members of the community are encouraged to call 02 9419 6969 to pledge a donation to the #TogetherForSyria Telethon between the hours of 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm (AEDT).
Armenian Relief Society of Australia Regional Committee Chairperson Nina Kaprielian said: “The ARS motto is clear, ‘with our people and for our people’, therefore, no matter what corner of the world Armenians find themselves, we will always be there ready to assist.”
Armenia Media Executive Director, Nora Sevagian, has urged members of the Armenian-Australian community to call and donate during the Telethon.
“Our compatriots in Syria have faced many obstacles over the years. A devastating decade-long civil war and now an untimely natural disaster adds to the devastation and desperation our brothers and sisters have experienced. We must do our part here in Australia and stand with our Syrian-Armenian brothers and sisters,” Sevagian said.
