MELBOURNE: Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) Executive Director Varant Meguerditchian will present at Return to Anatolia’s exhibition, entitled ‘Refugee Relief in the Near East’, on Saturday 1st October 2011 at the Yarra Plenty Regional Library in Melbourne, Victoria.
The exhibition will focus on the photographic documentation of the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide and the Near East Relief and feature pictures, images and ephemera sourced from Australia archives.
At the exhibition launch, Meguerditchian will discuss the efforts of individual Australians who left the relative safety of their homes in Australia to travel to Syria, Greece and Armenia in order to provide aid to the survivors of the genocides; many of whose descendents eventually made their way to Australia.
Exhibition organiser and Return to Anatolia Chairwoman Sofia Kotanidis welcomed ANC Australia to the event, stating: “We are pleased to be working with ANC Australia to raise awareness of the stories of those Australians who provided food, aid and shelter to the survivors of the Greek, Armenian and Assyrian Genocides.”
Commenting on the importance of the event, Meguerditchian highlighted: “Although similar exhibitions have been held in Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide, this is the first time an exhibition of the Near East Relief is held in Melbourne.”
“I am honoured for being given the opportunity to present at this Near East Relief exhibition as it reaches out to an entirely new audience in Melbourne, Victoria.”
The public exhibition will be launched at 1pm on Saturday 1st October 2011 in the Yarra Plenty Regional Library 394 Plenty Road Mill Park, Vitoria.
All members of the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian communities of Victoria as well as the wider public are encouraged to attend the launch of the exhibition.
Also on Saturday 1st October 2011, at 8pm the ANC Australia’s screening of ‘My Son Shall be Armenian’ (CLICK HERE) will be held in the Village Glen Waverly Cinema Complex.
