SYDNEY: The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) has placed a formal submission to the NSW Legislative Council’s Standing Committee on Law & Justice.
The Committee’s terms of reference were set to investigate the current racial vilification laws in NSW and called upon community organisations to make submissions as to the effectiveness of the current laws and recommendations for their betterment.
In a detailed submission, ANC Australia provided eight points of recommendation, which, if adopted, will further strengthen current laws to protect individuals and communities from racial vilification.
ANC Australia’s Executive Director, Vache Kahramanian commented: "The Armenian-Australian community has been a victim of racial vilification and it was extremely important for us to make a submission to the Standing Committee on Law & Justice."
Kahramanian added: "In a multicultural society like New South Wales, we cannot tolerate racial vilification of any kind and ANC Australia, as the peak public affairs committee of the Armenian-Australian community, felt obligated to add the voice of our community to this key issue. We stood with other notable community organisations, including the New South Jewish Board of Deputies and the Australian Hellenic Council in representing our respective communities. We look forward to receiving the findings of the Committee in May."
