SYDNEY: The Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC Australia) has announced it will host a lecture evening with the Hon. Armen Sargsyan, a Member of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh's Parliament, next Tuesday.
The former Minister of Culture, Youth Affairs and Sport is visiting Sydney and has agreed to present to the community during what ANC Australia Executive Director Vache Kahramanian has described as "a volatile period" in Artsakh's history.
Kahramanian said: "Artsakh is facing its most volatile period in recent history. Mr Sargsyan will cover a wide range of issues on the current state of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, recent Azeri provocations, the peace process, international recognition, and the economic climate."
The lecture will take place at the Armenian Cultural Centre on Tuesday, 3rd July at 7:30pm.
BIOGRAPHY
The Hon. Armen Sargsyan was born in 1963, in the Martuni region of Nagorno-Karabakh. He graduated from the State Pedagogic University in Yerevan with a PhD, then returned to Karabakh.
Sargsyan was the commander of an armed militia to protect his village from 1988. After the war, he worked as a lecturer in Artsakh State University from 1995-98. Sargsyan was also director of a historical museum in the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh from 1995 -97, and then Minister of Culture, Youth Affairs and Sport from 1997 to 2004.
Since 2005 he has been a Member of Parliament, and was reelected in 2010. Sargsyan is now the head of the ARF–D Party Faction.
