CANBERRA: Over 1,000 individuals have joined the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU) in signing a petition calling on the Australian Government to urge Azerbaijan’s dictatorship to open the road of life along the Lachin (Berdzor) Corridor to help prevent a second Armenian Genocide.
The petition, which closes on Thursday, 20 July 2023 (11:59 pm AEST), was published following approval by the Australian Parliament's House of Representatives Standing Committee on Petitions, and is currently the most signed active petition on the parliament website.
The petition request states that signatories “...ask the House to urge the Australian Government to stand with the International Court of Justice and prevent a second Armenian Genocide by unequivocally calling on Azerbaijan to comply with the ICJ’s ruling and end the blockade of Artsakh”.
“We should be proud that over 1,000 members of our community are standing with Artsakh, and we encourage our compatriots who have not yet signed to do so,” said ANC-AU Executive Director Michael Kolokossian.
Kolokossian encouraged members of the community to share the petition amongst Armenian-Australian and all Armenian friends over the next five days.
“We have five days to work to spread awareness of the looming humanitarian crisis our compatriots are facing. We must act now and encourage all Armenians and our friends to sign this parliamentary petition and have our voices heard,” added Kolokossian.
