Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Armenia reported that the Armenian and Turkish governments have agreed on the formulation of protocols designed to lead toward the establishment of formal diplomatic relations and the opening of the Turkish-Armenian border.
Since the formation of the Republic of Armenia, the people of Armenia, in conjunction with the Armenians of the Diaspora, have called for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey based on mutual respect and without any preconditions.
Contrary to the will of the Armenian people, the protocols set forth during the recent Swiss-mediated meetings between representatives of the Armenian and Turkish governments indicate preconditions proposed by Turkey which violate the rights of the citizens of Armenia and Armenians throughout the world.
Specifically, these protocols;
- jeopardise the ambition for international recognition of the Armenian Genocide
- deter legitimate claims for reparations resulting from the Armenian Genocide
- endanger the rights of the people of Nagorno Karabakh to self-determination
As legitimate stakeholders, Armenian-Australians have a right and a responsibility to raise concern with the Armenian government regarding these dangerous protocols, which are due to be signed by Armenia and Turkey in the forthcoming month.
To reaffirm your support for;
- international recognition of the Armenian Genocide
- Nagorno Karabakh’s right to self-determination
- a free, united and independent Armenia
