President Serj Sarkisian
Office of the President
Republic of Armenia
Cc: Minister Eduard Nalbandian (Minister for Foreign Affairs)
Dear Mr. President,Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Armenia reported that the government of Armenia and the government of Turkey have agreed on the formulation of protocols designed to lead toward the establishment of formal diplomatic relations and the opening of the Turkish-Armenian border.
Since the formation of the Republic of Armenia, the people of Armenia in conjunction with the Armenians of the Diaspora have called for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey based only on mutual respect and without any preconditions.
Contrary to the will of the Armenian people, the protocols set forth during the recent Swiss-mediated meetings between representatives of the Government of Armenia and the Government of Turkey indicate preconditions proposed by Turkey which violate the rights of the citizens of Armenia and Armenians throughout the world.
Specifically, these protocols;
- jeopardise the ambition for international recognition of the Armenian Genocide
- deter legitimate claims for reparations resulting from the Armenian Genocide
- endanger the rights of the people of Nagorno Karabakh to self-determination
As legitimate stakeholders, we, Armenian-Australians reaffirm our support for;
- international recognition of the Armenian Genocide
- Nagorno Karabakh’s right to self-determination
- a free, united and independent Armenia
...and seek that the government of Armenia, who has been entrusted with the responsibility of representing the will of Armenians throughout the world – including Armenian-Australians – refrains from agreeing to sign protocols that will violate the rights of all Armenians.
Sincerely,
